Good morning, Boise. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 1st of August.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Boise police said traffic stops, crashes and fatalities increased compared to last year and urged drivers to stop dangerous and distracted driving.  Idaho Press
  • A wildfire known as the Range fire started on July 31 and is burning near Orchard Training Range, prompting CodeRed evacuations for residents along South Pleasant Valley Road and West Thompson Road — fire crews with one overhead team, four engines, two dozers and one water tender work to contain the blaze.  KBOI
  • A seven-foot-deep, three-foot-wide sinkhole appeared on July 31st in the westbound lane of Floating Feather Road in Eagle — crews made temporary repairs and closed the road between Downing Drive and North Greypebble Way today until August 12 as they assess further infrastructure damage.  KBOI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A NetCredit study used Instacart to compare prices at over 2,000 grocery stores in Idaho and found Grocery Outlet led with prices 29% below the state average while Target, known mostly for clothes, ranked second with nearly 13% lower prices — a surprising result for shoppers on a budget. The findings may help Idaho families choose where to shop as food costs continue to rise.  KIDO
  • On July 10, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for 850,000 Ozark Trail 64 oz water bottles sold at Walmart after three customers reported exploding lids (two suffered permanent vision loss). Walmart urges Idaho shoppers to immediately stop using the bottles and return them for a refund.  KIDO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Espe Alegria hosted The Basque Hour on KBOI Radio from 1955 to 1981 and helped connect Boise’s scattered Basque community using music, news, and family shout-outs. Her legacy lives on at Boise State University Archive — with items like her passport, certificates, and music collection continuing to guide cultural efforts.  KBOI
  • The Basque president arrived in Boise today for Jaialdi (the Basque heritage festival held every five years) as a longstanding tradition that celebrates Basque culture in the community.  Idaho Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Boise School District has launched its first Parent Advocacy Group that will meet in September to build trust and improve communication between families and district leaders — including Superintendent Lisa Roberts and Deputy Superintendents Wendy Johnson and Nick Smith. The group will include parent representatives from four high school attendance areas as well as at-large members from elementary and junior high families across the district.  KBOI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • BLM closed the Rabbit Creek off-highway vehicle parking area—located in Owyhee County—to protect firefighters battling the Striker Fire near Marsing, which likely ignited from lightning strikes and is burning about 6,000 acres of grass and brushlands.  KBOI
