CRIME NEWS

  • A 42-year-old Nampa man, Kenneth Ray Dial Jr., was sentenced to life in prison with 65 years fixed after pleading guilty to 16 felony counts for sexually abusing a minor in Ada and Canyon counties — he will be sentenced in Canyon County for additional charges on August 26.  KBOI
  • The Latah County Sheriff's Office has begun releasing sealed files from Bryan Kohberger's case, which include bodycam footage from an August 21, 2022 traffic stop — where he said he was not wearing his seat belt — and he later pleaded guilty to murdering four University of Idaho students, receiving four life sentences plus ten years without parole.  KBOI

CULTURE NEWS

  • After a 10-year break, Boise hosts Jaialdi 2025, the largest Basque festival, which started July 29 and will run until August 3. The weeklong event features traditional dance, music, sports and food that celebrate Basque culture—attracting tens of thousands of visitors from Spain, Argentina and Australia.  KBOI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The 16th and Bannock intersection is closing today for road work — commuters must use 13th Street as a detour. The intersection will reopen at the end of October.  KBOI
  • The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is speeding up kinship placements for children removed from their homes thanks to a new bill that lets relatives complete background checks in hours+instead of days. Deputy Director Monty Prow said the change aims to double the 27 percent of children currently placed with kin to keep them safe while they wait to reunite with their families.  KBOI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tropicale Foods issued a recall for 14 flavors of ice cream bars by La Michoacana and Helados Mexico that were removed from local stores (Albertsons, Fred Meyer, and Walmart) due to an undeclared milk allergen, and one person has reported falling ill after consumption.  KIDO
  • High heat this July has put seniors in Rexburg at risk of dehydration, and neighbors are urged to check on at-risk elders. The Madison County Senior Citizen Center delivers meals (with daily wellness checks) to help vulnerable seniors (by watching for hydration issues) during the extreme summer heat.  Local News 8
