COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Boise will open its four outdoor pools on May 28 and splash pads at Ann Morrison Park over Memorial Day weekend—offering residents cool spots for summer fun. The city also plans free summer activities at its parks and events.  KBOI

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 20th at about 9:40 a.m., TSA officers at Boise Airport found a stun gun hidden in the shaft of a walking cane and the traveler voluntarily surrendered the device—TSA credited its screening for keeping a dangerous item from the plane.  KIDO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Boise partner agencies have advised residents and visitors that the official Boise River float season is not open due to hazardous conditions caused by fluctuating river flows and debris from snowmelt—official opening will be announced once flows stabilize and safety measures are complete.  KBOI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Boise is raising downtown parking rates temporarily due to increased demand—new parking meters and extended paid parking hours will impact drivers who usually park for free. Drivers should check their parking times to avoid extra fees.  KIDO
  • Today, the Idaho DMV is updating license plate designs and permit rules that affect how drivers register their vehicles—changes include a revised 'Don't Tread On Me' plate, new color options for the 'World Famous Potatoes' plate, and no longer requiring a front plate for vehicles without a bracket. Additional updates to instruction and motorcycle endorsement permits will be implemented as part of the agency's effort to modernize its services.  KIDO
  • The Idaho Transportation Department warns that the 100 Deadliest Days will begin Monday, May 26 and run through Labor Day—a period with a higher risk of fatal and serious crashes due to more travelers, speeding and impaired driving. Last summer saw 82 traffic fatalities and 2023 was noted as the deadliest year for Idaho road crashes in over a decade.  KIDO
  • Bonneville County Deputies and the Idaho Office of Highway Safety and Law Enforcement will boost patrols going into Memorial Day weekend and throughout the 100 deadliest days of summer—Deputies will check that drivers and children are buckled up to help prevent injuries.  Local News 8
  • A new firefighting communication kit designed in Boise is being deployed to help crews communicate reliably in rugged areas during the 2025 wildfire season—developed at the National Interagency Fire Center and partly funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, it was successfully tested on an Oregon wildfire and will soon be rolled out to more teams.  KBOI

  • With Memorial Day weekend ahead, Pest Gnome's ranking shows that five top travel spots for Idahoans—Nashville, Phoenix, Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles—are among America's worst for bed bug infestations while Boise, Nampa, and Meridian rank lower. Travelers should inspect accommodations carefully to avoid costly treatment later.  KIDO
