The Boys & Girls Clubs of Ada County announced that it will offer free summer meals to children ages 1 to 18 at four locations; meals in Meridian and Garden City will run Monday through Friday from June 2nd to August 8th — while Kuna meals will run from June 9th to August 13th — to support families during the summer months.
Today, Boise Fire’s Swift Water Rescue Team was called in by the Idaho National Guard to rescue two rafters after their raft capsized on the Owyhee River in Malheur County, Oregon—firefighters Peter Hammett and Chris Hendershot were hoisted from a Black Hawk helicopter and executed a technical rope rescue that brought the survivors to safety before they were flown back to Boise.
On Monday, Nebraska signed a waiver that bans soda and energy drinks from SNAP benefits beginning January 1 to support healthier choices; Idaho submitted a similar waiver last Friday to stop using food stamps for soft drinks and candy and is now waiting for a federal decision in the coming weeks—this action may lead to tighter controls on SNAP purchases.
The federal government ended nearly $50 million in pandemic-related grants to Idaho Health and Welfare on March 24—cutting funds for children’s vaccination programs, mental health services, and substance abuse initiatives.
Officials said current programs remain unaffected as they execute exit strategies to minimize disruptions.
A new report from Healthy Babies Bright Futures revealed that tests of 145 rice samples showed many brands exceeded federal arsenic limits—with over one-quarter of the samples surpassing the limit for infant rice cereal—which raised safety concerns for Idaho families.
