CULTURE NEWS

  • Zoo Boise has opened the Virginia R. Bartak Red Panda Passage that gives red pandas an Asian forest-like habitat with outdoor areas and overhead walkways. The $2.5 million project was funded by donations from community members, private foundations, and business partners — officials say the new exhibit is a key part of the Heart of the Zoo campaign to update facilities over the next decade.  KBOI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lewis-Clark State College held its first graduation ceremony at the Idaho State Correctional Center on Wednesday, May 14th, awarding associate degrees in liberal arts to inmates —Dwayne King and Erin Anthony Murphy— during a ceremony attended by about 80 guests. The college’s prison education program, the first approved in Idaho, now serves roughly 165 incarcerated students across three locations to help reduce recidivism.  KBOI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Idaho are ready to help with firefighting efforts nationwide as the fire season now spans the entire year — a shift that requires coordinated work from several agencies. Boise will host the Firewise Garden Open House and Preparedness Fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Old Penitentiary Road to give homeowners guidance on fire prevention.  KBOI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators, representatives and experts met at the Capitol on Wednesday to discuss Idaho's housing strains and how they affect cities and potential homeowners.  Idaho Press
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson held a candlelight vigil on Tuesday at the Capitol to honor 345 fallen officers including Ada County Sheriff's deputy Tobin Bolter. Their names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial—joining over 24,000 officers—and Johnson offered condolences to the families.  KBOI

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA warns Idaho travelers to avoid gas station products containing Tianeptine—often called Gas Station Heroin—because the drug can cause seizures, loss of consciousness and even death. Travelers are urged to stick with products they have safely used before their journeys.  KIDO
