BUSINESS NEWS

  • Don and Charly’s on 10th street in Downtown Boise— a hidden gem that opened in 2023— is drawing crowds after a viral TikTok review, with locals enjoying its menu that offers vegetarian and gluten-free sandwiches along with a popular side salad. The shop’s friendly staff and appealing decor have helped it quickly build a strong local reputation.  KIDO
  • A key figure from Washington came to Boise during National Small Business Week to honor local small business owners and their work in boosting American entrepreneurship—local community leaders say the visit highlights the state's support for small businesses.  Idaho Press
  • On May 5, Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and began selling its prescriptions, pharmacy inventory, and other assets—its eight remaining Idaho stores are now at risk of closure or transition to new operators. The company also announced that Rite Aid Rewards will end on May 6 while gift card services will stop on June 5.  KIDO

CRIME NEWS

  • Meridian Police arrested 43-year-old Derek Thayer after he barricaded himself in a home on the 1400 block of West Loretta on Monday afternoon—officers reported that after hours of a standoff he was found unresponsive, received medical attention, and will be booked into Ada County Jail once cleared.  KBOI
  • Ada County Sheriff's Deputy Tobin Bolter's name will be added to the Idaho Peace Officer Memorial on May 8 after a candlelight vigil at 9:00 p.m. today in honor of his fatal shooting during a routine traffic stop on April 20, 2024 when Dennis Mulqueen shot him – his name will also be added to the National Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. during Police Week.  KBOI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The West Ada School District will offer free meals to children ages 1 to 18 through the Summer Food Service Program from June 2 to August 1 at schools, parks, and libraries across the district with no application needed. Special events such as a Summer Feeding Kickoff on June 11 and a birthday party in July will include activities for children — ensuring they get the nutrition they need during the break.  KBOI
  • Boise State University issued a statement on the impact of Idaho's new Senate Bill 1198—this law limits some diversity, equity and inclusion programs and will take effect on July 1—and the university will work with campus stakeholders to support academic freedom and comply with state and federal laws.  KBOI

  • The City of Boise replaced the old grass at Cherie Buckner-Webb Park with turf similar to that outside City Hall—free public Wi-Fi is now available and all park areas are open for use.  KBOI
  • More than 100 people gathered in front of Boise City Hall on Tuesday to voice support or opposition to Mayor Lauren McLean's proclamation naming the Pride flag as an official city flag. The event showed local community engagement with the mayor’s decision.  Idaho Press
