  • Joann Fabrics is shutting its stores in Idaho, Utah, and Washington after a bankruptcy auction led to a nationwide liquidation sale that has already started. The company is selling online—returns are not being accepted and gift cards were valid only through February 28th—and final closures are expected in the coming weeks.  KIDO

CULTURE NEWS

  • A recent article shows that unusual baby names trend in Idaho, Utah and Washington based on Social Security Administration 2021 data—listing top 25 names for boys and girls—while it notes that Idaho bans names deemed too unusual.  KIDO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fannie Mae revised its forecast for the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage to average 6.8% during 2025 and finish at 6.6%, citing tariff uncertainty that may raise homebuilding costs. The update—after an earlier revision from 6.2% to 6.5% in January—adds to growing trade policy risks affecting long-term rates.  KBOI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ada County Highway District began construction on a pedestrian safety project at the intersection of 16th Street and Washington Street in Boise last week—an effort launched a year-and-a-half after the 2023 death of a Boise High School student. Officials said the project will help reduce pedestrian risks as it moves forward.  Idaho Press
  • Mayor Trevor A. Chadwick rescued a young driver stranded in snowy mountains for over 24 hours while he and his wife celebrated their anniversary. He spent about four hours lifting the vehicle, shoveling snow, and using traction boards+ he advised the driver to pay it forward by preparing for emergencies.  KBOI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gene Hackman's death on February 18 in New Mexico made people worried about hantavirus after his wife was found to have the virus, which comes from rodents and has killed five people in Idaho. Health officials say residents should look for signs like fever, tiredness, and cough—there is no cure for this deadly virus.  KIDO
