COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Make-A-Wish Idaho’s Gebert-Arbaugh Polar Bear Challenge set a record yesterday when 527 people signed up and 1,300 attended, raising $127,785 for wish-granting efforts in Boise—marking its biggest year yet.  KBOI
  • A ribbon cutting on State Street Thursday welcomed the new chapter for the Interfaith Sanctuary in Boise — a small community shelter rooted in faith — with 100 attendees showing support with smiles and hugs. The event marks a hopeful step forward for local services.  Idaho Press
  • The City of Boise will host events to mark America's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with arts, culture, storytelling + civic gatherings leading up to the Fourth of July celebration. The series kicks off with a staged reading at JUMP on Feb. 5.  KBOI
  • Women of Idaho will host a march on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on the steps of the State Capitol to showcase the theme 'Feminist Power is People Power' with speeches from community leaders (sponsored by SW Idaho NOW).  KBOI

  • A Dunkin’ franchise group is actively searching for sites to open the chain’s first Idaho location in Boise. Broker JP Green said he will share further updates + details when available.  KIDO
  • Curbside Books is a new mobile bookstore built from a 1980s tram that debuts Saturday in Boise and will visit local events, offering readers a fun way to start their New Year reading. The unique shop also welcomes families looking for fresh book finds.  KIDO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Zoo Boise will host a Paint & Pinot event on Thursday, Jan. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. where guests can paint, sip adult beverages, and enjoy viewing animals + mingle with friends.  KIDO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Idahoans now pay more for foods as prices have risen 22% for sirloin steak, 21% for cheddar, 18% for cookies, 15% for ground beef + 7% for ice cream compared with last year, causing higher grocery bills.  KIDO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Boise School District superintendent Lisa Roberts announced she will retire at the end of June. The district will begin planning a new leadership transition after years of service + steady community support.  Idaho Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho Fish and Game will remove a group of California bighorn sheep from Reynolds Creek, Unit 40, this winter in response to a pneumonia outbreak that causes high mortality rates; any salvageable animals will be processed for local distribution.  KBOI

HEALTH NEWS

  • A working group in the Legislature presents its recommendations today to address Idaho’s severe physician shortage; the plan calls for 1,400 new WWAMI seats, expanded rural training, & up to $1.6 million in funds to boost medical education.  KBOI
