Drawing upon letters, photos, and news clippings from Hemingway's own day, biographer and editor Verna Kale speculates on what it might have been like to read The Sun Also Rises for the first time in 1926, as well as what it was like for the not-yet-famous Ernest Hemingway himself to have written it. This talk invites lifelong Hemingway fans as well as those encountering Hemingway's work for the first time to consider why this novel continues to resonate with new generations 100 years later.

Dr. Verna Kale is an Associate Research Professor of English at Pennsylvania State University and Associate Editor of the Hemingway Letters Project. She is the editor of the Norton Library Edition of The Sun Also Rises (2025), author of the critical biography Ernest Hemingway (2016), and editor of Teaching Hemingway and Gender (2016). She was a program advisor to the PBS documentary film HEMINGWAY, directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (2021). She currently serves as President of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation and Society.
